We've just returned from a wonderful long weekend in the Champagne region - my brother's birthday present to me. We went with him and his wife by car. On the way we stopped in a small town which had a 13th century cathedral. There were these amazing tomb stones all around the apse which had been carved and inlaid with local (I assume) marbles. The carved parts had long since been worn smooth by centuries of foot traffic, and what remains are these amazing graphic fragments in marble inlay.
