12th March, at 6.30pm

Join us for the launch of Patrick's book The House Rules at Berdoulat HQ on the 12th March. Patrick will be in conversation with author and creative strategist Emilio Pimental-Reid, before a Q&A with the audience, followed by signings and dedications.

Its title "The House Rules" expresses the studio's mantra "the building is the client". Whilst essentially it's about Patrick's practice, how it came to be, and what his principles are, illustrated with beautiful photography of recent (mostly as yet unseen) work, it's not a typical interior design book per se.

His childhood was spent on a building site, and he was mixing lime render aged three. He learned his trade at the coal face via purist parents (who only hung paintings with 18th century hand forged nails). The book plots out how these early years, followed by a fine art degree resulted in the birth of Berdoulat, now in its twentieth year. There are frequent references to food, and even a recipe, hence it's apt. that Nigel Slater wrote the foreword. Rather than being organised on a project by project basis, Andrew Montgomery's stunning images are thematically sequenced, and serve to illustrate Patrick's musings on the difference between today's approach to design and manufacture, versus that of period buildings. At times philosophical, at others technical, he focuses on how these fundamental changes in practice affect our mental health and that of the planet.

The ticket price includes a signed copy of the book (RRP £40), and there will be a free bar at the event.

If you would like a Special Edition as opposed to the Global Edition of the book, there will be the opportunity to upgrade at the event. The two editions of the book are explained in detail here.
