When we first saw Lydia's work, we were drawn to her incredible inlaid stoneware. She tints the clay with oxides and rolls the tinted clays together - a method reminiscent of ancient encaustic tile making, whereby the colours are not an applied glaze, but in the clay itself.

We collect Burleighware meat plates, and love their shape. We find them really useful as serving dishes, not just for meat but large pasta dishes, salads, hors d'oeuvres etc. We decided to take this ancient method, and combine it with the form of our much loved 19th century meat plate. We asked Lydia to work with abstracted shapes inspired loosely by woodworking tools. If you look closely you might spot a hammer head, or plane.

Each and every plate is unique, with these inlaid shapes overlapping, giving each its own rhythm. Available in two colourways, "Woad" is a blue tone inspired by the painted shutters of Lectoure, and "Moss" is a deep midnight green. Both colourways "frame" food really well - making even a lowly tomato salad spring to life!

Please note that owing to their being handmade plates, sizes can vary by a few millimeters, and there is a welcome wibble to each. We recommend washing by hand only.
